Postcard from Venice

It was late in the afternoon when I walked out of the Mestre train station in Venice. There weren’t many tourists, and I quickly bought a ticket for the vaporetto which would take me to my hotel next to the Rialto bridge. As the boat pulled away from the pier, I took a deep breath and noticed the whiff of the sea in the air- a distinct smell which always has the ability to calm me.

It wasn’t the first time I was in Venice and it will not have been the last. In fact, I remember the first time I was there as a little girl running around chasing the pigeons on St. Mark’s Square at a time when one was still allowed to feed them. Since then, I been a few times but only for the day, and I longed to experience Venice in the early morning, late at night and take turns down narrow walkways and see where I ended up. As mentioned in my last blog post, I was there for a special photography workshop.

Here are my photos, most of them taken as I probably annoyed our group by rushing around to keep up. Yes, I was almost always the last to follow everyone else as they disappeared down a narrow alleyway. But I couldn’t help myself- being in a place that oozed history and art!

Where to stay:

Ca’ Rialto House

Where to eat:

6342 a le Tole, Castello 6342,  30122 Venezia
Extremely popular with the locals. The pizza and pasta is freshly made and delicious.

Delicious food, friendly hosts

Dal Mas Pasticceria, Rio Terà Lista di Spagna, 150, 30121 Venezia
A huge selection of delicious pastries and I could have easily had one of each!

Bar Da Gino, Dorsoduro, 853A, 30123 Venezia VE, Italien
A nice place to stop and have a coffee with a pastry.

These photos deserve a gallery showing! The weather was on your side with water reflections on stones and moody overcast skies, which made those boats pop.
    Excellent work, Juliana.

    1. Maybe one day I will do a showing. It’s a thought!

I did get a kick out of you being the one to “lag” behind, as you couldn’t bare to tear yourself away from every site you saw through your camera lens. Remember “Lotusland” and the girl who kept getting in trouble for falling behind the group? Hee…hee!
It is hard for me to grasp living in a place surrounded with water that sometimes invades every inch of the island and that has so much ancient history. It must be like living in a movie! You have such an eye for all that makes for an enticing photograph that makes the viewer feel what you felt at that moment.

I believe you capture the essence of what a travel brochure tease should look like. I want to be there, following whatever group you are in around like a dog on a leash. Lovely photos, Juliana. You are gifted.
