Hiking through Appenzell

With another case of cabin fever, and my last outing dating a month back, I decided it was time to get out and do some hiking. I watched the weather very closely and when it looked good, I was on my way.

There weren’t too many options because it’s still fairly early in the year. I didn’t want to have to take a long train ride to get to my starting point and it had to be in an area where I wouldn’t be hiking in snow. I opted for a two day hike through Appenzell, starting in Stein AR, hiking north towards Lake Constance and ending in Rorschach.

The weather was perfect and in no time at all, I had shed my jacket. It was a beautiful day and I had magnificent views of the Alps.

I stayed the night in Speicher AR and early the next morning I continued on. I had forgotten how hilly the Appenzell region is and was constantly hiking up one hill and down the next.

Soon, I left the view of the mountains behind me and was enjoying the view of the lake in front of me.

When I finally arrived in Rorschach, I was happy to see that there was a beautiful area to sit on the lake that was right next to the train station. I treated myself to an hour on a bench to stare at the water and wish I could just stay there. But, alas, all things come to an end, and I slowly walked to the station to take the train home.

Oh Juliana, your photos take my breath away! What a beautiful hike and although your pictures tell it all, I’m sure it was even more spectacular in person! Wish I could have been with you.

  2. What a wonderful choice for an early spring walk. I especially liked your photos of Speicher and Rorschach with the Bodensee (Lake Constance). I wish I could have been with you on that hike.
