Fall Color in Engadin

During our stay in the Engadin we were blessed with clear blue skies, snow topped mountains and perfect fall color. The larches were yellow, turning darker and more intense every day. As I have mentioned many times before, we spend as much time as possible in the beautiful Engadin valley and surrounding area. The canton Graubünden holds a special place in our hearts. This year were were extremely lucky to have been there when the larches were almost at their peak and to go with it we had perfect weather. The mountains were covered with fresh snow, due to the snowfall the weekend before. Yes, I took too many pictures yet again.

We spent the first two night in the Muottas Muragl Hotel and we were spoiled by the view. Before even checking into the hotel we had pulled out our cameras to capture the evening light on the mountains and the lakes below. The mornings were no different. We were up at the crack of dawn to take pictures in the icy cold.

Amongst the highlights were a trip to Diavolezza (we had been up earlier this year in summer and it was interesting to see it covered in snow) and a walk from Morteratsch back to Pontresina. The colors!

Our next stop was in Valposchiavo. In Pontresina we stepped into the Bernina Express which took us up to the Ospizio Bernina and back down to Poschioavo. This is a train ride I will never tire of no matter how often I take it. Our day was spent in the train as we took the train to Cavaglia to see the glacier mills, then back down through Bruiso and to Tirano for a gelato before heading back to Poschiavo. The next day we hiked to Lago Viola and back to Lago Saoseo.

One of my favorite pictures I took on the trip is the following one. The sun was disappearing behind the mountain and within 1 minute after taking this one it was gone.

This trip was one I won’t forget. The bright colors of the trees were just as I had always imagined, the blue of the sky just as it should be. We will be back!

We stayed at the newly renovated Muottas Muragl hotel. The rooms are comfortable and the food is exquisite. In Poschiavo we stayed at the Croce Biana and ate twice at the Hotel Albrici. We have stayed at Hotel Albrici before and eaten at the restaurant several times. I can highly recommend the Albrici, both to stay and to eat at. Delicious traditional food from the region as well as pizza are served at this lovely Swiss Historic Hotel.
